Engineers in the Spotlight

In celebration of Engineers week, we’d like to spotlight a couple of the Emerson Flow Solutions engineers. The first engineer in the spotlight is Jarrod Zacher. He works as an Embedded Software Engineer at the Emerson office in Boulder, Colorado. Jarrod has been with the company for 1.5 years and holds bachelor’s degrees in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, both from Colorado State University. We had a chance to ask Jarrod some questions.

Editor: Can you tell us a little more about what you do?
Jarrod: I am part of the software engineering group responsible for developing firmware for flow measurement and process control systems. I’m currently working on the Micro Motion 5700 Field-Mount Transmitter and internal support applications.

Editor: What made you choose to go into engineering?
Jarrod: Several reasons really. A number of things guided me toward hardware and software engineering. My early experiences with my first computers, an Intel 286 and a 486, fully equipped with the venerable floppy disk drive. I used these computers were mainly for gaming (Multi-User Dungeons and Doom) but eventually that drove a desire to understand how computers work. This ultimately led to learning how to code and build custom computers. Work experiences that were influential to my career were fixing vehicles at an automotive repair shop and assembling circuit boards on a manufacturing line.

Editor: What, to you, is the best thing about being an engineer?
Jarrod: The joy and satisfaction of creating things, both practical and whimsical.

Editor: What would you say inspires you every day?
Jarrod: To provide for my family and solving problems using cutting edge technology.
