This month, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced new rules for minimizing and reducing emissions on well pads. This is the first push to reduce emissions from methane – particularly targeting the oil and gas industry. These new standards also built upon standards set in place in 2012, which targeted VOCs and other air toxins. The goal for this new rule is to reduce methane emissions by 510,000 short tons by 2025. According to the EPA, about 33% of methane emissions come from the oil and gas industry, and these emissions have a higher short-term impact on global climate change.

Reducing your emissions will not only bring you into compliance with the new regulations, but it will also reduce product lost to flare or atmosphere and improve allocation measurement. Emerson’s wide breadth of oil and gas solutions – from heater treater and separator solutions to well tank management – can help significantly reduce your emissions. Emerson helped one operator reclaim 3.4% of their gas by identifying a poorly operating separator with Micro Motion Coriolis diagnostics. That 3.4%, if considered over a field of 1000 wells, could equate to $2.9M/yr in lost gas revenue. Intelligent diagnostics and separation unit operation will not only catch issues before they arise, but will help ensure a reliable, environmentally compliant well pad, all while driving down your operational costs.
